Metric sizes you will meet in DIY projects
Imported tile, cabinets, appliances and hardware are designed in millimeters and centimeters, then labelled with the nearest inch size. The labels round, so measure before you cut or order:
- Tile: a 30 × 30 cm tile is 11 13/16″, not 12″ — over a 10-tile row that is 1 7/8″ short. 60 × 60 cm porcelain is 23 5/8″, and 60 × 120 cm planks are 23 5/8″ × 47 1/4″. Lay out a dry row before you snap your center lines.
- Appliances: European dishwashers are 60 cm (23 5/8″) wide and slip into a standard 24″ US opening with about 3/8″ to spare.
- Shelving and furniture: flat-pack depths of 35, 40 and 60 cm are 13 3/4″, 15 3/4″ and 23 5/8″.
