MB to GB Converter
Updated Formulas shown
Divide megabytes by 1,000 to get gigabytes: 1,500 MB = 1.5 GB. Operating systems that count in binary (MiB, GiB) divide by 1,024 instead — pick MiB/GiB in the unit menu to see the difference.
Formula: gigabytes = megabytes × 0.001 (exact)

How to convert megabytes to gigabytes
- Type the value in megabytes into the converter (or into the right-hand box to go the other way).
- Multiply by 0.001 to get gigabytes.
- Round to a sensible precision with the Decimals control; the table below covers the values people look up most.
Megabyte to gigabyte formula
gigabytes = megabytes × 0.001 — 1 MB = 0.001 GB. The factor is exact by definition (NIST SP 811), so any rounding comes only from how many decimals you keep.

Security camera and NVR storage
Recorders fill up faster than you'd think. Storage per camera per day = bitrate (Mbps) × 86,400 s ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 GB. A 1080p camera at 4 Mbps records about 43 GB per day; four cameras fill a 2 TB drive (which reports as 1.82 TB) in roughly 11–12 days of continuous recording. Motion-only recording and H.265 compression stretch that several-fold.

Frequently asked questions
How many MB in a GB?
1,000 MB in a GB (decimal, used by drive makers and networks); 1,024 MiB in a GiB (binary, used by Windows and RAM).
Why does my 2 TB drive show only about 1.8 TB?
The drive holds 2,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows divides by 1,024⁴ and still labels the result "TB", giving 1.82 TB. No space is missing.
Is 1,500 MB more than 1 GB?
Yes, 1,500 MB = 1.5 GB.
